The Story

Curated by Chief Fly-Fishing Enthusiast Tom Rosenbauer, lifelong student of the sport and 45+-year Orvis associate, this selection of flies are his go-to trout patterns for sucess on the water. Exclusive to Orvis, Tom’s collection includes both new patterns and clever tweaks to old favorites for an effective collection to fill your fly box. Set includes two each of 10 patterns for a total of 20 flies. Imported.

Collection includes:

Tom Rosenbauer’s Deep Pupa: Tom’s version replaces the fur body of the original with bright green ultra wire and adds a subtle black bead, replicating the prominent dark wing pads on a caddis pupa.

Tom Rosenbauer’s Wire Caddis Larva: Ideal on a Euro rig or dry dropper when nothing is hatching, this pattern replicates the small, thin-cased caddis larvae that drift off the bottom and into the current in trout streams.

Tom Rosenbauer’s Wire Mayfly Nymph: A proven pattern, Tom’s version imitates sulfurs and Hendricksons in the larger sizes and works well prior to or during a hatch.

Tom Rosenbauer’s Chubby: Tom’s take on the Chubby Chernobyl is the version he uses during hatches, combining natural and synthetic materals for an enhanced lifelike appearance. Works as an attractor, hopper imitation, imitation of an adult stonefly, or large moth.

Tom Rosenbauer’s Rabbit’s Foot Emerger in tan, PMD/Sulphur, and olive: Tom updated this guide favorite with a tactical wide gape hook and positions the cul-de-canard to keep it positioned in the surace film. Tan version works for eastern and western March Brown, Hendrickson, Light Cahill, Gray Fox, and other tan-colored mayflies. PMD/Sulphur version is ideal for the many species of pale evening duns or pale wateries. This subtle, low-floating fly is an excellent choice for picky fish. The olive version is a handy one for the emerger stage to imitate small, olive-colored mayflies.

Tom Rosenbauer’s Wire Soft Hackle: The addition of a small tungsten bead behind the hackle gives this pattern just the right amount of weight while the subtle brown, amber, and dun combination entices trout no matter what type of mayflies or caddisflies are hatching.

Eck Caddis: A low-floating caddis imitation that works well for both emerging and spent caddis that can be drawn underwater and will pop to the surface, just like an emerging caddis. The neutral gray and brown makes this a winner for most caddis hatches.

Balanced Dragon in black and white: An effective pattern for predators, Tom’s take on Dragon Tails is a balanced version with a more realistic, enticing swim. The black version is ideal in low light and murky water, the plain white version is designed to be colored with waterproof markers to add a lateral line, spots, or a darker back.

Combo Platter Nymph: This heavily weighted pattern uses pheasant tail and hare’s ear fur. Ideal as a stonefly nymph imitation or for larger mayflies like the March Brown and Western Green Drake. Black tungsten beads in the thorax add weight without the flash that can scare off picky trout.

Sneaky Spinner: The remedy for fussy trout on flat water, this pattern’s bent hook lends the fly a more lifelike profile than a straight shank without compromising hooking quality.
